Our history
The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) traces its lineage to 1868. Journalist Jane Cunningham Croly founded a women's organization called Sorosis after being denied entry to an all-male event celebrating Charles Dickens because of her sex. In 1889, Jane Croly invited women’s clubs across the United States to a convention in New York, which led to the formation of GFWC in 1890 when 63 clubs ratified its constitution.
Our present path
Today, GFWC is an international organization with thousands of members across a dozen countries and all 50 U.S. states. GFWC consists of national, regional, state, and local groups.
The Women of the 'Burg Society is a local group that serves Spartanburg, South Carolina. It originated in November of 2021 and was federated by GFWC in November of 2022. Our mission is to unite and empower women of The 'Burg by fostering education, social connection, and civic engagement.
